cPanel Vs Plesk

I had been a loyal cPanel User for years. Recently I had to manage a Pleask based server for a client. It was bit confusing initially, before I managed to figureout how it works. Here is a comparison, hope my Cpanel loyalty doesn't makes it one sided :)

1. User Interface

Plesk scores with a clean and better looking interface. cPanel, on the other hand looks a bit ameturish with default skin. But the good thing is, cPanel is skinnable and there are a number of skins available now a days.

cPanel looks a bit cluttered, with all the functionalities. I guess nubies might be more comfortable with Plesk. However, I think it's just a matter of getting used to. GUI should not be a major factor for a server management system.

2. Functionality

cPanel is a lot more powerful, especially from the server management side(WHM). Better management and back up options make cPanel my favourite. I especially loved the mail trouble shooting options, when I had problem with a number of email accounts of a client. Probably I havent seen the full power of Plesk yet, still I would rate cPanel much above, when it comes about the functionality. A lot of webmasters love Fantastico, which comes as a cPanel add on.

3. Support and Software Integration

I have never contacted either support, so its hard to say. Few reports I have seen, put cPanel support above Plesk, which requires payment for any major issues.

Cpanel also have more options for billing and related softwares.

4. Price

cPanel costs $1255.00 currently, for an unlimited license. Plesk is cheaper at $799.00 for unlimited domains. For 30 domain license, plesk is just $199.00, making it a lot cheaper than any cpanel offering. Lease lincenses are alos available for plesk, as low as $29.95 / per month for a 30 domain license.

In short, Plesk is a lot cheaper than cpanel.

Bottom line is, Plesk is an easy to use and cheaper control panel, whereas cPanel is more powerful one. Ultimatlely, both are good and it is a matter of personal preference. cPanel still remians my personal favorite, I will recommend it any day.

I'm the opposite. CPanel seems to be acting like one of those very helpful people who just keeps getting in your way:

Me: I'd like to alter my configuration
CPANEL: ooh la, di, da, would you like a banana?
Me: Nope i'd like to alter my configuration
CPANEL: please choose between a range of weird strange options to start using EasyApache
Me: What do they all mean?
CPANEL: oh, you don't need to know, its all easy. The answers are probably somewhere in our vast documentation
{Click Video Tutorial Help}
Video: As you can see there are five options to choose from. Simply choose an option by pointing your mouse over one of them. Then click on it. then press submit. We hope that helped.
Me: Ahem. How useful was that video.

All i want to do is password-protect one of directories using a directive in one of my vhost's httpd.conf -- and i just cannot work out how or where it is.

Cpanel insists on doing this via .htaccess files. Which is not good if you want to have your site served in a windows dev server as well as linux live server.

At least with PLESK you can easily add directives to the httpd.conf (i still don't understand why WHM/CPanel called something 'Easy Apache' when it is much more complex than 'Actual Apache')

AAAARGH!

(you just caught me venting after hours of searching on google on how to solve this very simple issue.)

nice articel though. ;o)

Love the review.Since you said that you have not contact support for either of them. Well i can say that the support for PLESK is probably the worst in this day and age. The have a response time of 12 hours for a severe case. Also if you do not purchase their phone support they will not help you on the phone at all. You can't even get to a techncian to talk to them about the problem you just have to sit there and wait the 12 hours before they respond to anything. So if you do choose PLESK as your control panel i say good luck to ya because your on your own there is next to no help from parallels.

I don't like any of these "control panels" ... they feel like extra layers of clothes in the winter that make it harder to move. I guess they might protect beginners, just as winter clothing protects from the cold. But if you know your way around a Linux server, I think it is a lot easier to short circuit the panel and take direct action. For example, it is extremely easy to script ( via shell ) complex actions. Once scripted, you can effortlessly repeat ( without human repetition error ) arbitrarily complex tasks. On the other hand, "control panels" force you to manually repeat sequences of clicks and other UI actions. And since so much of their UI is graphical, it is even difficult to write down the steps you took! You wind up having to write notes like "Menu -> Account Information -> click 'Create new' link" which is clunky, time consuming, sometimes difficult to read back, and fragile to changes in the UI layout or text.
